Should I be offended that my boss recommended I read a book written for preschoolers? Anyway, I did what Monica told me and here’s what I learned from TOBET’s Everybody Has a Body.
This simple board book makes a profound point: every person we encounter, we meet through his or her body. Our bodies aren’t just physical matter; they reveal who we are on a deeper level. Pope John Paul II beautifully expressed this, saying, “The body… is capable of making visible what is invisible: the spiritual and the divine.” (TOB 19:4) Everybody Has a Body helps children grasp this concept in an age-appropriate way. This book shows kids that their bodies are special, reflections of their inner selves.
The book also emphasizes another important truth: “God makes boy bodies, and God makes girl bodies.” This straightforward statement carries an important message about the beauty of our creation. Boys and girls, men and women, are intentionally designed with differences that complement one another. Pope Benedict XVI highlighted this when he said, “The differences between man and woman… are complementary elements within a unified whole.” (Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church on the Collaboration of Men and Women in the Church and in the World 2004)
Everybody Has a Body gently introduces children to these essential ideas, helping them appreciate their own bodies and the bodies of others as gifts from God. I hope this book resonates with our little readers and helps them to see the beauty and dignity in themselves and others.
Thanks for the recommendation, Monica!
